A huge welcome to our new birthday fairy!

Published: Thu, 30th July 2020, 03:07:00 PM

Welcome to Sara, our new Birthday Fairy!  All OA/TOF children aged five and under receive a card from TOFS on their birthday, which is sent by our Birthday Fairy.  This is a volunteer role and we're very excited for Sara to join the TOFS team!  We are extremely grateful to Deepti Grover for carrying out the role of Birthday Fairy previously, we're sad to see her go!

Sara has this to say:

"Hi, my names Sara and I'm mum to three children, Matthew, Joe and Emma. My oldest son was born at 32 weeks with pure OA and had a colonic interposition 3 months later. He is now 17! Matthew also has Di George Syndrome and Autism. The years have certainly been interesting and the challenges Matthew has faced have been many. Matthew was tube fed until he was almost 8 and until recently had a really restricted diet and ate for the sake of it rather than because he enjoyed it. Following surgery on his pallet late last year, his interest and ability to eat has greatly improved and he hopes that at his next Dietician appointment, his supplements will stop. We couldn't be more proud of the young man he has become. He missed a lot of school due to his health problems and also has learning difficulties. However, it just goes to show when you get the right support, you can achieve. Matthew left school with Grade 4's and 5's in his GCSE's and won The Endeavour Award for his achievements. My husband found TOFS when Matthew was waiting for surgery at Alder Hey and we have been members ever since. Even though we've been members for 17 years, I only attended my first TOFS conference last year as this was the first time it hadn't clashed with my Son's birthday weekend. At the conference I offered to help in any way I could and the team recently contacted me to ask would I become the Birthday Card fairy. I didn't have to think about it! We used to love getting cards when Matthew was younger and then seeing his name in the Chew magazine as he got older. I've even got my 78 year old Mum helping by making cards. I hope you like them!"
