Wow, thank you for running for TOFS!

2020 may not have been a ‘normal’ year but that hasn’t stopped our fantastic TOFS members from achieving their fundraising goals!  This year the London Marathon and Great North Run have been virtual events, allowing our runners to represent TOFS by following their own self-set route!  We are incredibly grateful to all those who took on these challenges and raised huge sums of money for TOFS. Our runners raised a whopping £9118.72 for taking part in the Virtual London Marathon and £1616 for the Virtual Great North Run.

Event: Virtual London Marathon 2020

Inspiration: In memory of my son, John

It was a very wet and cold day to be running my first ever marathon, the London Virtual. The first 20 miles were not too bad but I started feeling it and finished in 5 hours 11 mins. I was grateful to be able to run the marathon for TOFS, in memory of my son. He was born with TOF and had a big fight in life, which unfortunately he lost at 15 months old.

Amount raised: £1349.45

Name: Laura Morton

Event: London Marathon 2020 virtual event

Inspiration:  My youngest son Harry was born with TOF and has never let it get him down.   All the hospital appointments and procedures he has had to go through, he just gets on with it without complaining.  When I hit the 20-mile mark and my legs turned to lead and I felt like I couldn't run anymore it was the thought of Harry's determination that got me through the last 6.2 miles.  TOFS gave our family such great comfort and support.

Name: Mitch Evans

Inspiration: Megan Evans (my TOF daughter)

Event: Virtual London Marathon 2020

On a wet and very windy Sunday morning in Porthcawl I managed to complete the marathon distance, slightly more in fact as the VLM Phone app made me run 2.5k more than my ever-reliable Garmin watch.  Many thanks to my support crew, Jan, Mo, Robin and Megan and to everyone who donated so generously via my fundraising page or direct to TOFS and to all my fellow TOFS runners for the support and inspiration, well done to you all! Finally thank you to TOFS for giving me the opportunity to run in this fantastic event, I hope we have done you proud.

Amount raised: £1313

Name: Marc Charnley

Inspiration: My son Dexter and to raise much needed money for TOFS

Event: Virtual Great North Run

I had already started training for this event and raised nearly £400 in sponsor money when the news came that the run would be cancelled this year but that a virtual event would take place instead.

I completed the run in 2 hours 20 minutes raising much-needed funds for TOFS.

Next year I hope to raise more if I finally get chance to run the Great North Run.

Amount raised: £720

Name: Gerald Hovenden

Event: Virtual Great North Run 2020

Inspiration: I was inspired to do the GNR (which I completed in 3 hours 5 minutes) in aid of TOFS by my grandson, Gideon, who was born with long-gap oesophageal atresia.  He is the loveliest little boy you can imagine (though on occasion the ‘terrible twos’ has kicked in!).

The GNR app was good – nice to hear the voice of Mo Farah urging me on for the last mile, and my wife ready to great me at the end.

Amount raised: £537.50
