It’s a New Year, and we are pleased to announce we have a new recruit to the TOFS team!

Interviews for the Volunteer and Events Co-ordinator role were held at the end of last year by telephone and Zoom, and member of TOFS, Sophie Parkins, was delighted to accept the position.

Sophie will be responsible for helping TOFS fulfil its objectives in extending pastoral care to all those born with OA/TOF, young and old. She will be coordinating the recruitment and development of volunteers, including our valuable network of TOFS’ local contacts (TLCs), and will also co-ordinate and manage key events, both online and in person, to benefit the OA/TOF community.

Sophie has experience of some of the complexities of OA/TOF as she is mum to George, aged three, who was born with the condition.

Sophie said: "When George was born three years ago with OA/TOF, it was an exceptionally scary and frightening time, not only as a first-time parent, but to be thrown into an unknown world full of medical jargon, operations, procedures and how to care for a baby with complex additional needs. TOFS has been a vital source of information for me and my family consistently throughout the last three years, and continues to be so. I am over the moon and very proud to be joining the TOFS team as Volunteer and Events Co-ordinator, and look forward to helping and supporting our volunteers, and other families like mine."

Previously, Sophie has worked in fundraising, volunteer management and event organisation roles, most recently for a national health charity – firstly, as a Fundraising Manager, then as Area Manager, leading the East Midlands Community Fundraising Volunteer Managers. Whilst on extended leave with George, she wanted to give back to the hospital that cared for George, and with friends and family raised £38K in a year for the neonatal intensive care unit at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.

Sophie will be working Tuesday 8:30am-5pm, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30am-2:30pm.  If you’re interested in volunteering to help the TOFS charity, Sophie would love to hear from you, just email
