OA/TOF: What have the lungs got to do with it?

Speaking at the TOFS Seminar 2024, Professor Rebecca Thursfield, Paediatric Respiratory Consultant at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, presents on the respiratory problems associated with oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula (OA/TOF).

The presentation discusses the causes of these problems, such as tracheomalacia (a condition where the windpipe is weak and floppy), aspiration (food or drink entering the airways), and recurrent infections.

The presentation includes data on lung function in patients with OA/TOF, showing that people with this condition often have reduced lung function, especially those with a long gap between the two parts of the oesophagus.
